Over the years as a member of the Canadian Association of Professional Dog Trainers (CAPDT), I have witnessed firsthand the remarkable growth of this organization and its potential to drive the change so greatly needed in dog training across Canada.
Like many members, I initially joined for practical benefits, such as discounts on essential services like dog training business insurance. But it didn’t take long for me to discover the true value: learning and networking opportunities. The Forum newsletter is top notch!
What Does Belonging to a Professional Organization Mean to Me?
My own journey in this field began while I was still working in British Columbia’s post-secondary education system, where I held a range of roles in administration, learning design, teaching, facilitation, and educator support. At the same time, I began offering dog training services on a part-time basis. My curiosity about canine behaviour grew steadily, and I immersed myself in every conference, workshop, and discussion forums I could find time for.
I also took a renewed interest in professional learning and in authentic approaches to demonstrating skills and knowledge. These experiences have since converged in unexpected and rewarding ways. Today, I hold roles in three organizations, all focused on education and advancing the work of animal care professionals:
- Member, CAPDT Professional Standards & National Curriculum Committee
- Education Director, IAABC Foundation
- President, Professional Animal Care & Training Association of British Columbia
Alongside these roles, I continue to work directly with clients and trainers through my Being With Dogs business to address canine behavioural challenges. One of the highlights of my consulting practice is Breakfast Club, which has grown into a community of local trainers supporting both clients and one another.
I remain deeply impressed by CAPDT’s vision and commitment to educating and supporting dog training apprentices and professionals. If you are considering membership, my advice is simple: join us—and help Canada set the standard as a global leader in dog training excellence.
