Dear Members,
As many of you know, CAPDT introduced the STOP List in 2019 in response to feedback from our membership. This initiative marked a significant moment for our organization, as we elevated our Code of Ethics and became one of the first professional associations to take a firm stance against the use of aversive tools and punishment-based methods.
However, in 2023, it became clear that further action was necessary. Despite the requirement for members to agree to the Code of Ethics, we continued to receive reports that some individuals were openly using tools prohibited by the STOP List.
We also heard from members that our previous complaint process was too cumbersome, and that more accountability was needed. The Board took this feedback seriously and made several key changes to strengthen our standards and support members in upholding them:
- A Streamlined Complaint Process
We worked with our Ombudsman to simplify the reporting process. Members can now submit concerns via a straightforward online form. We eliminated the complaint fee and removed the requirement for complainants to be identified to the member in question. - Improved Clarity at Renewal
We reviewed and updated our website and renewal process to ensure it is explicitly clear that agreement with the CAPDT Code of Ethics is a requirement for membership. - Proactive Communication
We shared these updates through the member portal, newsletters, The Forum, and social media. Our message has been clear: failure to comply with our Code of Ethics and STOP List will result in revocation of membership.
Following this year’s renewal period, our members had identified a number of members reported to be out of compliance. The Board reviewed these cases, and our Ombudsman contacted the individuals involved. Most voluntarily resigned their membership, while others have since been removed for failing to align with our standards.
This process has reinforced an important truth: the effectiveness of our policies depends on the engagement of our entire membership. As a volunteer-run organization, it is not feasible for the Board to monitor all member activity. We rely on each of you to help uphold the integrity of our profession by reporting violations when they occur.
Our greatest asset is our community of ethical, science-based trainers and professionals. We are committed to keeping our public directory current with active members who demonstrate alignment with our mission and values.
Together, we can ensure CAPDT remains a leader in the Canadian dog training industry. Here’s how you can help:
- Report violations of our Code of Ethics or STOP List when you become aware of them.
- Volunteer your time and expertise. We are actively seeking members to join the Professional Standards and National Curriculum and Membership committees.
Thank you for your continued dedication to ethical training and to strengthening our profession. We are proud to work alongside you as we build a better future for dogs and the people who care for them.
Megan Stanley,
Board Chair
